‘Mere Daubers’ is a quote from Baudelaire referring to his opinion on the work of Claude Monet, while a staunch advocate of Manet and Constantin Guys, Baudelaire was dismissive of Monet. This is the starting point for Faine’s composition that continues the grid theme of recent works and explores the flexible concept of what is acceptable to the art community, and how the one day’s ‘outsider art’ will be considered ‘art of the establishment’ the next. At the base of the composition is a chequerboard containing reproductions of late nineteenth/early twentieth century avant-garde artworks. We are invited to test our art historical knowledge and name the artists/artworks represented. The second layer of the composition is a grid of consecutive letters that can be broken down into the names of the artists concerned. A spiral of the alphabet creates a second layer of text.
